18-year-old David Pereira died early Sunday morning after being stabbed outside a Tim Hortons on King Street West near Caroline around 2:30 a.m.

Hamilton Police have charged 49-year-old Raleigh Stubbs with first degree murder. It is Hamilton’s ninth homicide of 2013.

Pereira was stabbed twice. He was with friends at the time. Bystanders quickly jumped into action and provided immediate first aid. A nearby police officer called to nearby Hamilton Paramedics, stationed a block away, who quickly rushed to Pereria’s and immediately began caring for his injuries.

Police say Stubbs had been involved in a separate altercation earlier in the evening. Police were called to Stubbs’ residence in the area of Bay and Market. Police say they are investigating both incidents “to determine whether they are linked in any way.”

Pereria’s was conscious when paramedics began treatment. Hamilton Paramedic Commander Carmen D’Angelo says his condition quickly deteriorated as paramedics rushed to Hamilton General Hospital.

He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Pereira’s friend Juan Perez was injured by the accused and told CHCHNews that it happened quickly. Pereira and friends had spent the evening in Hess Village and were walking home the accused bumped into Pereira.

“He started yelling at each other and then the knife got pulled,” Perez said to CHCH journalist Lisa Hepfner.

Hamilton Police Superintendent Dan Kinsella, who commands the investigative division, arrived on scene shortly after 4 a.m. and provided a media briefing with only CHCH and myself present.

During the briefing, Supt. Kinsella said Police had many witnesses who are cooperating and were interviewed by detectives.

Police are appealing for more witnesses to contact them by calling 905-546-4925 or Crimestoppers at 905-522-8477
