Concerning access news south of the border

Some concerning news reported today on The Chronicle of Higher Education‘s news blog.

First, the US credit crunch is causing a great deal of concern about the availability of commercial student loans. The American government is not involved in the direct provision of loans, unlike the Canadian government. Sure our system of loans has it shortcomings, but at least students are available. It will be interesting to see if the Democrats change this if they win the presidency. (For the record, I’m a huge McCain fan.)

The other piece of news is a report stating that “as many as 3.2 million college-ready students will forgo a bachelor’s degree this decade because of financial barriers.”

This should be concerning news. I can’t help but think the credit crunch is contributing to the potential lost of able students.
