Hamilton Police to take over Hostage Rescues Locally from OPP

Hamilton Police are taking over hostage rescue operations within the City of Hamilton after the police service’s tactical team, the Emergency Response Unit, completed provincial training to gain accreditation as a Hostage Rescue Unit.

The Hostage Rescue Unit took over responsiblity on September 5, 2013.

Previously, the Ontario Provincial Police provide hostage rescue in Hamilton.

The team will “consist of a minimum 12 full-time tactical officers, including the supervisor”. They will also respond when an armed person barricaded themselves.

Chief Glenn De Caire established procedures for when the team is used. They are not included in the package.
