An interesting project out of the Random Hacks of Kindness event in Philadelphia last weekend called “Cost of Freedom Project”
The project tracks the cost of the government identification required to acquire a free Voter ID.
The app is the work of a group of journalists who are making the case that identification requirements in some states are a de facto poll tax. Poll taxes were outlawed during the 1960s as Jim Crow laws were challenged by the US federal government.
This project raises an interesting question – are the costs of government identification a potential barrier to lower-income voters in Canada?
