Speaking at the University of Ottawa March 30th on open data

I’ll be at the University of Ottawa’s law school on March 30, 2012 as part of the Creative Commons Salon: Open Data panel discussing what open data means to in the professional world. I will be speaking as a journalist, joining Tracey Lauriault (Carleton Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre) and Pete Forde (Buzzdata).

My views on the opportunity and threat of open data to journalism can be read in the most recent edition of the Journal of Professional Communication.

There are Canadian journalists using open data and a few who provide raw original open data for others to build upon. Other outlets republish or release information provided by government. I may be the only one actively involved in an open data organisation.

I expect to learn much during this day and hope those of you in Ottawa will join us for the discussion.
